A
teacher was teaching mathematics to a seven-year-old George and asked him,
"If I give you one orange and one orange and one orange, how many oranges
will you have?" George thought for a few seconds and replied confidently,
"Four."
The teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer of three. She was disappointed. She thought maybe the child did not listen properly. She repeated, "George, listen carefully. If I give you one orange and one orange and one orange, how many oranges will you have?"
George had seen the disappointment on his teacher's face. He calculated again on his fingers, but from inside he was also searching for the answer that will make the teacher happy. His search for the answer was not for the correct answer, but for the answer that will make his teacher happy. This time he hesitatingly replied, "Four" again.
The disappointment continued on the teacher's face. She remembered that George liked grapes. She thought maybe he does not like oranges and that is what is making him lose focus. Now with an exaggerated excitement and twinkle in her eyes, she asked, "If I give you one grape and one grape and one grape, then how many grapes will you have?"
Seeing the teacher happy, young George calculated on his fingers again. There was no pressure on him, but there was little pressure on the teacher. She wanted her new approach to work out. With a hesitating smile, young George said, "Three."
The teacher had a victorious smile. Her approach did work and she congratulated herself. But one thing still remained a question. Once again she asked George, "Now if I give you one orange and one orange and one more orange, how many will you have?" Promptly George answered, "Four."
The teacher became restless. "How George, how?" She asked him in a little irritating voice. In a hesitating voice, George replied, "Because I already have one orange in my bag."
When someone gives us an answer that is different from what we expect, let's not think that they are wrong. There may be an angle that we have not understood at all. We will have to listen and understand but never listen with a predetermined notion.
